From Uppsala to Arlanda: a quick guide

Uppsala is a beautiful city but it is also convenient in many ways, I would even describe it as a lagom city; with all the advantages of a big city, but without its drawbacks. One of its many conveniences is how close it is to Sweden’s largest airport: Arlanda.

Travelling from Arlanda to Uppsala back and forth is quite easy, however I thought that a quick guide would be useful if it’s your first time making this trip.

Note: I have never done this trip by train, so I’ll skip that part and will only explain how to do this trip by bus, which is also the cheapest way, although it takes a bit longer.

From Arlanda to Uppsala

Ok, let’s imagine that you just landed and stepped into the arrivals lobby. Now what?!

First, don’t panic, and start by locating the area where all bus stops are. There is a bus stop area per terminal, so it is very likely that the only thing that you’ll need to do is go through the main door. You can also guide yourself with the signs that are around the airport or by asking at the information desk. Also, don’t worry about the language barrier, almost everybody in Sweden is quite proficient in English.

Once you have reached this area, look for the stop of the bus number 801 towards Uppsala. You can also check the timetable there, so you get an idea of when will the bus arrive.

The trip takes about 30-45 minutes and the bus will take you to Uppsala’s Central Station, where you can continue your trip to your final destination.

There are several ways to purchase your bus ticket from Arlanda to Uppsala:

  • At Arlanda’s Visitor Center in Terminal 5, or at the information desks that are scattered around the other terminals.
  • At a self-service machine close to the bus stop.
  • Purchase it with your credit/debit card when boarding the bus (this usually costs a little bit extra).
  • Buying them through the UL app; note that you need to add your card’s info in the app so you can load it with funds for purchasing tickets.

From Uppsala to Arlanda

Now, for the way to Arlanda Airport.

For starters, I would recommend taking any bus that stops at Uppsala’s Central Station (so pretty much any bus). When getting off at the Central Station, look for the bus terminal C1, which is the stop for the bus 801 towards Arlanda.

You can look for the bus’s schedule online, or just by looking at the timetable located in terminal C1.

For purchasing a ticket, you can pick any of the methods listed below:

  • At a self-service machine that you can find at the Central Station.
  • Purchase them with your credit/debit card when boarding the bus (this usually costs a little bit extra).
  • Buying them through the UL app; note that you need to add your card’s info in the app so you can load it with funds for purchasing tickets.

As I final note, I’ll list below the approximate price per trip according to the UL page:

Price adults
Travel funds 69 SEK
Prepaid 90 SEK
On board 111 SEK

Price youth
Travel funds 42 SEK
Prepaid 57 SEK
On board 78 SEK
